The Australian Government has enhanced security measures for domestic air cargo from July 1, 2020.

Consignments will be subject to piece-level examination. Consequently, large consolidated lodgements will be dismantled to facilitate piece-level screening.

All freight submitted at any Australian airports will require a valid consignment security declaration (CSD) prior to uplift.

Known consignors must secure air cargo in accordance with their security program. When clearing cargo, they must also issue a CSD.

If not a known consignor, regulated air cargo agents (RACA) must examine air cargo in keeping with an examination notice and issue a valid CSD.

The new measures will strengthen Australia’s air cargo security, reducing susceptibility to the heightening sophistication of terrorist plots.

Virgin Australia have stated that, to cover the cost of screening, an additional $0.13 per kg charge will apply to any freight presented without a valid CSD. Clients with non-screened freight should also allow one hour in addition to current lodgement times for freight processing.

Qantas Freight will charge a screening fee of $1.90 (+GST) per piece, or $2.50 (+GST) per piece for Q-GO Priority cargo. They have also amended cut-off lodgement times to account for unscreened freight processing.

For more information, please visit the Department of Home Affairs website or contact one of our accredited customs brokers at AU 1800 247 267 or NZ 0800 247 267.

Due to the impact of Cyclone Debbie, we’re advising you to prepare for service delays at all Queensland terminals today.

Flights to and from Queensland are likely to experience significant delays – upwards of 1 – 2 hours.

Brisbane, Coolangatta

  • Road closures are impacting access to our freight terminals for both staff and customers, limiting our resources and affecting on-time lodgement
  • Current freight lodgements/collections are being assessed, dependent on weather disruption to flying schedule

Hamilton Island, Mackay

  • We’re currently not accepting freight in and out of these ports due to fuel constraints.

Townsville, Rockhampton

  • Our freight terminals have reopened and operations resumed.

We’ll continue to monitor the weather and keep you updated as the situation changes.

Thank you for your understanding. Our thoughts are with the communities in the path of Cyclone Debbie.

Airborne Express is committed to delivering freight on time, in the most time critical situations, in perfect condition. Due to the nature of air travel, your cargo may be handled many times before it reaches its destination. It is important that all items are appropriately protected by their packaging. To make sure that your cargo travels safely and quickly, read the following tips.

Shipping Boxes

  • Always use high quality corrugated cardboard boxes for parcels.
  • For fragile or heavy items, double- wall or tri wall constructions are recommended.
  • If reusing old boxes, ensure that they have not lost their rigidity.
  • Look out for the manufacturer stamp which tells you information about the construction type and strength of the box.
  • Under filled boxes may collapse and over filled boxes may burst. Prevent this by choosing a box with the right size for the content being shipped.

Shipping with Pallets

  • Choose pallets large enough to prevent overhang of freight and with the proper strength to withstand stacking
  • Never exceed the rated capacity of your pallet
  • Ensure cartons are new and of proper strength to withstand stacking
  • Use strapping to secure your cartons to the pallet, and shrink/ stretch wrap to prevent pieces from getting lost or separated from the load.

Irregular Items

  • Use triangular mailers as they will sit flat on the conveyor belt, and will be processed faster.
  • Check that your goods don’t have any items hanging or sticking out that could cause damage to other shipments and that ample padding has been added to your freight.

If you have any concerns or would like more information on how best to pack your shipment, email us at cargo@airborneexpress.com.au. Alternatively, one of our account managers will be happy to help you on 1800 247 267.

The iconic Qantas Kangaroo is getting a makeover in preparation for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner which is due to enter the fleet a year from now.

The game changing Boeing 787 Dreamliner is the latest in aircraft technology and will fly more passengers and cargo farther than before. With 154.4m3 of cargo capability, long haul air freight has become even more accessible.

The logo change is only the fifth time the red-and-white image on the tail of Qantas aircraft has been updated since it was first introduced in 1944.
Updates in the past have also occurred around the introduction of innovative new aircraft to the fleet. The last update was in 2007 to coincide with the introduction of the Airbus A380 to the Qantas fleet.

Qantas Group CEO, Alan Joyce, revealed the new design to a hangar of around 1,000 employees and guests in Sydney.

“Since the image of a kangaroo first appeared on a Qantas aircraft more than 80 years ago, it’s come to represent the spirit of Australia. When passengers see the Qantas tail at airports around the world, it’s a symbol of home,” said Mr Joyce.

“A fresh brand helps symbolise the new era Qantas is entering as we head towards our centenary. It’s an era of new destinations, new technology and a new standard of service.”

In an interesting link to the airline’s heritage, the classic winged kangaroo that appeared on tails across three decades will feature under the cockpit window and incorporate the individual name of each aircraft.

Detail on initial Qantas Dreamliner destinations will be revealed in coming months, with the first international flights on sale before Christmas. The aircraft will gradually take over routes currently operated by the airline’s B747 fleet as well as adding new city-pairs to the Qantas International network.

Brisbane West Wellcamp, the Southern Queensland airport located just outside of Toowoomba will now have a regular freight service with Asia. Come November, Cathay Pacific will add the airport to its Australian cargo network, with a once weekly service operating Sydney-Melbourne-Wellcamp-Hong Kong. Cathay Pacific will deploy its newest and biggest freighter, the Boeing 747-8F on the route, following a successful trial flight to Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport last year. Flight schedules from Cathay showed CX22 departing Sydney at 1220, arriving in Melbourne at 1350. After an hour and 45 minutes on the ground, the 747-8F is then due to take off at 1535 and touch down at Wellcamp at 1645. The final leg is scheduled as an 1815 departure, landing in Hong Kong at 0045 the next day. Cathay said the flight times would allow for “fresh produce to be delivered to the markets and restaurants in China later that morning as well as onto a vast number of destinations around the world” from the airline’s Hong Kong Cargo Terminal.

Effective immediately Qantas has prohibited carriage of shipments of recalled new and used Samsung Galaxy Note 7 mobile phones from carriage as cargo on all Qantas Group aircraft. This includes Qantas and Jetstar passenger aircraft as well as their fleet of fourteen freighter aircraft.

This decision is in accordance with the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations that state:

“Lithium batteries identified by the manufacturer as being defective for safety reasons, or that have been damaged, that have the potential of producing a dangerous evolution of heat, fire or short circuit are forbidden for transport (for example those being returned to the manufacturer for safety reasons).”

The Qantas Group considers Samsung Australia’s recall of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 mobile phones to be “defective for safety reasons”, therefore will not accept any new or used devices consigned as cargo.

Need the shortest delivery time possible? Follow these quick tips for express air freight.

Shipping cargo interstate is an important part of many Australian businesses. Same day air freight between domestic airports has become increasingly popular and necessary for shipping time-critical cargo. If your business depends on receiving or sending goods urgently, you need to be able to send the cargo off as quickly as by possible. We have collated some quick tips that will help you can streamline the process and avoid unnecessary delays.

Ensure the air way bill is correct

The airway bill serves as a contract of carriage between the shipper and the carrier as well as a receipt of goods by the airline carrier. Cargo cannot be shipped without the airway bill, and in order to avoid delays it is vital to ensure the airway bill is correct.

Make sure you check:

  • The details of your shipment are correct
  • The weight of your cargo is correct
  • The recipient information is correct

Carefully pack the goods for air freight

When shipping time-critical cargo, goods arriving damage free is even more important. In order to ensure that your delivery arrives both safely and on time, it is important to follow the guidelines your carrier provides.

If a shipment is delicate or fragile, it is important to take extra care and make sure that appropriate packaging materials are used.

Clearly label your goods

Clear labels ensure that cargo shipments arrive on time and are handled appropriately. Therefore, it is important that when labeling your delivery, standard labeling practices are followed in accordance to your requirements.

Include:

  • Company name
  • Contact
  • Address
  • Contact number
  • Orientation labels to ensure that that cargo remains damage free
  • Any appropriate handling labels
  • Number cargo items and indicate how many items there are in total

Take care to remove all other labels on the packaging to avoid confusion.

Confirm number of cargo items

The final quick tip is to ensure that your cargo count is accurate. By ensuring that the cargo count matches the quote and order you can rest assured that none of your items will be left behind.

When you require the shortest delivery time possible, following these quick tips for air freight shipping can help ensure there are no avoidable delays to your cargo. Book your cargo on the next flight now, or alternatively, to learn more about our express interstate service contact an Airborne Express representative today on 1800 247 267.
